Our approach to pelvic health
Whether in-person in our Mount Kisco, NY office, or via a virtual visit, every Winuk Pelvic Health patient will receive the level of attention and evidence-based care necessary to alleviate their symptoms and maintain long-term results. And they will receive that care without ever feeling rushed to tell their story. They will be given the time needed to thoroughly evaluate their current complaints and how those complaints came to be. They will be heard and seen as a whole person, not just a symptom or a body part. WPH patients receive more than treatment … they gain a partner in their health care journey.

FAQs

Pelvic health physical therapy is a highly specialized area of physical therapy that focuses on dysfunctions that can arise within the muscles, nerves and connective tissues of the pelvic floor. These structures form a sling that runs from the pubic bone to the tailbone. They help support your abdominal and pelvic organs, maintain stability of your spine and pelvic girdle and play a key role in bowel, bladder and sexual function.
Pregnancy, surgery, menopause, radiation and/or chemotherapy, inactivity, obesity, heavy lifting, medications, chronic constipation and persistent cough are just some of the many factors and conditions that may produce changes in the pelvic floor musculature. Weakness or tightness of these muscles can contribute to the development of pelvic floor dysfunction.

Patients with chronic constipation or incomplete bowel emptying, fecal or urinary leakage, urinary and frequency, symptoms associated with abdominal, urological or gynecological surgeries, as well as women looking to optimize their musculoskeletal health and function during and after pregnancy, can all benefit from pelvic floor physical therapy.

Absolutely! In pelvic health, many physical therapy interventions are based in education, changing behaviors and patterns, lifestyle management and exercise instruction … in other words, giving you all the knowledge, tools and strategies necessary to achieve change. And although physical therapy has traditionally been a hands-on profession, research has indicated that a virtual platform is an effective way to deliver high-quality care and oftentimes, enhance outcomes due to improved attendance and compliance. Virtual visits can ease the most common barriers to care such as travel time and associated expenses, inclement weather and need to juggle work and childcare schedules. More time to devote to therapy, fewer distractions. It’s that simple!

At Winuk Pelvic Health, all initial evaluations are conducted virtually to reduce wait times and allow for flexibility in scheduling. These sessions are 75 minutes in length to allow for in-depth exploration of past medical history, orthopedic history and current symptoms. We will discuss any/all pelvic floor dysfunctions which may involve bowel, bladder and/or sexual function, pain, pregnancy/postpartum issues and any pertinent surgical history. You will be asked to provide your specific goals for therapy and we will set a plan of care based on those goals. You will learn initial management strategies and be educated about your diagnosis. At the end of your initial visit, you will receive a summary and any handouts via email. You will decide if you prefer to continue with in-person sessions, all virtual or a combination of both. This visit may also be used for a second opinion or an annual wellness visit, in which case ongoing therapy may not be necessary.

If you have ever wondered if you could benefit from consulting with a pelvic floor specialist, consider the questions listed below. Oftentimes, symptoms that have existed for a long time become part of “who you are” and no longer seem out of the ordinary to you. A “YES” answer to any of these “common, but not normal” statements would be reason to seek guidance:
I leak urine when I cough, sneeze, lift, exercise or perform another activity
I feel like I need to urinate frequently and/or with urgency
It takes many attempts to complete just one bowel movement
I have fewer than 3-4 bowel movements each week
I must assist with my finger vaginally or rectally to have a bowel movement
I leak stool with no awareness that it is happening
I wake from sleep to urinate more than twice nightly
I feel bulging and/or heaviness in my vagina
I have pain with tampon use, pelvic exams and/or intercourse
I have chronic vaginal, rectal pain, lower back or abdominal pain

That’s OK … remember, all initial visits are virtual. During that first visit, we can explore best treatment options for your lifestyle and availability. Most patients find that they enjoy virtual visits with the option for hybrid care, as needed. The need for a pelvic floor muscle assessment, manual therapies or biofeedback services will all require in-office care at our Mount Kisco, NY location.

“I looked for a pelvic floor physical therapist while trying to avoid surgery. I could have gone to someone closer, but I drove 45 minutes to see Dr. Winuk. She explained everything so well, gave me exercises that began to help after just one week of doing them, and helped me make lifestyle changes that also helped with my problem. If you are fortunate enough to have found her, don’t hesitate to go to her. I highly recommend her!”

“The pelvic floor physical therapy has been very helpful and accomplished my goals of managing my urinary symptoms. I truly wish we had more practitioners like you. I have recommended your services and approach to other women in my age group with similar problems.”
